Being Named Solar Capital of New England
Firm’s Stafford Hill Solar Project a Big Piece of City’s Solar Development
(Rutland City, VT – groSolar congratulated Rutland City and Green Mountain Power for their efforts in making Rutland the solar capital of New England. The city has more solar per capita than any other city in the region, according to Green Mountain Power. The Stafford Hill project, built by groSolar, is the largest solar project in the city.
“The community in Rutland City has embraced solar as a key piece of becoming an energy innovation hub, and we’re very excited to be a part of that,” said Rod Viens, Executive Vice President of Operations for groSolar. “As a Vermont company, we take a lot of pride in helping make cities like Rutland into true clean energy leaders.”
The innovative Stafford Hill project generates solar energy that can be stored and used to power an emergency shelter at Rutland High School in the event of weather-related power outages. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the Stafford Hill Solar Farm is the first project to establish a micro-grid powered solely by solar and battery storage, with no fossil fuels. The project also utilizes land atop a closed landfill, which was otherwise unsuitable for development. groSolar utilized 7,700 solar panels to build the 2.5 MW (DC) project, which also includes a 4MW battery storage system.
