Solar Project for Mohawk Valley Community College Moves Forward
October 6, 2015
ROME, NY – The Rome City Council Planning Board, at a meeting today, approved the site plan for a 2.8MW ground-mounted solar project to be built just southwest of the intersection of Old Oneida and Lowell roads.
Known as the Mohawk Valley Solar Partners project, this development is a partnership between groSolar and Mohawk Valley Community College. At completion, the approximately 9,000 ground-mounted solar panels are expected to generate power to the equivalent of 35 percent of the College’s total electrical usage.
“This proposed solar project brings with it a number of benefits to the entire Rome community,” said MVCC President Dr. Randall VanWagoner. “In addition to the significant electricity cost savings for MVCC, this project will also enhance educational programs, such as allowing us to incorporate solar power training into the electrical service curriculum.”
“groSolar is excited that the Planning Board has granted site plan approval,” said Gary Skulnik, groSolar Director of Marketing. “At this point, once we receive final utility interconnection from National Grid, we can begin mobilizing for construction. We’re proud to be a part of this region’s move toward becoming a leader in new technology, new jobs, and innovation by embracing solar and other cutting edge industries.”
Solar is a zero emission power producer with no smells, smoke, or other airborne pollution – just reliable, renewable clean energy. This project will:
· Produce enough to power approximately 350 homes
· Offset >2,300 metric tons of CO2 per year
· Equal the planting of about 1,900 acres of trees, annually
